Brightness tends to make a home feel more cheerful and adds to the comfort of a living space. Also, it adds warmth to the living environment. There are many ways in which you can brighten a dark room, and we would like to share some of our most effective tips with you.

Adding more windows is not always a practical solution, particularly if you’re renting your home. Even if you own the home, adding more windows can be a sizable investment, as walls have to be knocked out to make room for the windows. However, there are some great low-cost options to choose from.

Lighten Up on Your Flooring

The flooring can make a huge difference to the brightness of a room. Light-colored bamboo can replace hardwood flooring. If you don’t want to do that, try using white or beige area rugs.

Invest in Lighter Furniture

The furniture can often add darkness to a room, particularly if you have leather or dark hardwood furniture. By reupholstering dark-colored furniture with lighter fabrics, you can significantly reduce the investment while at the same time brightening your room.

Reflect the Light

A great alternative to installing new windows, is to hang mirrors. Mirrors reflect both artificial and natural light, and are inexpensive. It will make the room seem airier and more spacious.

Sources of Light

Another alternative to installing new windows, is to install better lighting. Speak to an electrician about rewiring the room to install more or better light fixtures. Instead of expensive incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, rather use CFL or LED lighting. Consider recessed, accent or track lighting, which are all good for lighting a space. Floor lamps are also useful.

Paint the Walls Light

One of the quickest, cheapest and most effective remedies for a dark room, is to paint the walls white. This method will help your home feels brighter by reflecting light and is particularly handy if you paint the wall opposite a window white.

Enlightening Window Treatments

Natural light is always best, and you can invite the light in from outside by opening up your window treatments at every opportune moment. Heavy drapes will block out natural sunlight, so rather invest in Roman shades and Bamboo blinds. By opting for opaque treatments, you have the option of privacy when you want it, and plenty of sunlight during the day time. Choose light colored window treatments, such as light brown, canvas, cream or white. Likewise, your window blinds should be made of light cloth, rather than plastic or wood, which will keep out all the sunlight.
